About Saint William of Montevergine
William was an early twelfth-century Italian pilgrim and hermit from Vercelli. Settling on Monte Partenio in southern Italy, he attracted disciples and founded the community of Montevergine, later shaped within Benedictine tradition. He combined severe prayer with charity to the poor, then established other communities before dying at Goleto in 1142.
