About Saint Porphyry of Gaza

Porphyry, born around 347 in Thessalonica, lived as a hermit near the Jordan and cared for the poor in Jerusalem before becoming bishop of Gaza. In a city where Christians were a minority, he endured hostility, sought imperial protection for his community, and oversaw construction of a large church. He died around 420.
