About Saint Matthew the Evangelist
The Gospel presents Matthew as a tax collector whom Jesus called from his booth with the words, Follow me. He responded immediately and welcomed Jesus at table among other outsiders. Christian tradition identifies him with the apostle and evangelist whose Gospel emphasizes fulfillment of Scripture, the kingdom of heaven, and Christ’s abiding presence with the Church.

Merciful God, through Saint Matthew’s intercession, call us away from whatever compromises our freedom. Teach us to welcome people others avoid, listen deeply to Scripture, and follow Christ promptly in the ordinary places of work. Amen.
