About Saint Mary, Our Lady of Mercy
The title Our Lady of Mercy is especially linked with the Mercedarian family, founded in thirteenth-century Barcelona to ransom Christians held captive. Tradition connects Mary’s maternal encouragement with that mission. The devotion presents her as a mother who leads believers toward Christ’s liberating mercy and toward practical sacrifice for people trapped by bondage, debt, or oppression.
