About Saint Martin de Porres
Martin de Porres, the son of a formerly enslaved Black Panamanian woman and a Spanish nobleman, entered the Dominican community in colonial Lima despite racial barriers. Trained as a barber-surgeon, he cared for sick people, founded services for orphans and the poor, and practiced humble prayer. His charity crossed divisions of race, class, and species.
