About Saint John of God
John of God, born in Portugal in 1495, lived as shepherd, soldier, laborer, and bookseller before a dramatic conversion in Granada. After experiencing harsh treatment during a mental-health crisis, he devoted himself to humane care of sick and abandoned people. His work inspired the Brothers Hospitallers, a worldwide ministry of health care.
