About Saint Canute IV of Denmark
Canute IV ruled Denmark from 1080 to 1086 and supported the Church with gifts, legal protections, and efforts at reform. His taxation and royal policies also provoked serious resistance. During a rebellion he was killed before the altar in Saint Alban’s church at Odense; medieval devotion honored him as Denmark’s royal martyr.
