About Pope Saint Silverius
Silverius became pope in 536 during the Gothic War and intense rivalry between Ostrogothic and Byzantine powers. After refusing pressure connected with the deposed patriarch Anthimus, he was accused of treason, stripped of office, and exiled. He died in harsh confinement on the island of Palmaria in 537 and is honored as a martyr.
