Karol Wojtyła survived Nazi occupation and Communist rule in Poland before becoming Pope John Paul II in 1978. His long pontificate emphasized human dignity, the universal call to holiness, youth ministry, religious freedom, and a new evangelization. He traveled widely, helped inspire peaceful resistance to oppression, sought interreligious dialogue, and publicly forgave his would-be assassin.
