About Saint Damien of Molokai
Damien de Veuster, born in Belgium in 1840, was a priest of the Sacred Hearts who volunteered in 1873 to serve people with Hansen’s disease at Kalaupapa, Molokai. He shared the community’s life, built homes, water systems, churches, and coffins, and defended residents’ dignity. After contracting the disease himself, he remained until his death in 1889.
