About Saint Augustine of Canterbury

Augustine was prior of a Roman monastery when Pope Gregory the Great sent him and other monks to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in 596. Welcomed by King Æthelberht of Kent, whose wife Bertha was Christian, he established his see at Canterbury and became the first archbishop in that renewed English mission.
