About Saint Ambrose

Ambrose was a Roman governor and catechumen when the people of Milan unexpectedly acclaimed him bishop in 374. Quickly baptized and ordained, he gave away wealth, studied theology, defended Nicene faith, composed hymns, and challenged imperial interference. His preaching and pastoral patience helped lead Augustine toward baptism, making Ambrose a major Latin Doctor of the Church.
