About Pope Saint Celestine V
Pietro del Morrone was a thirteenth-century Italian hermit and founder before his unexpected election as Pope Celestine V in 1294. Feeling unable to govern amid political manipulation, he formally resigned after five months. His return to solitude was prevented by his successor, and he died confined at Fumone in 1296.
