About Pope Saint Callistus I
Callistus rose from slavery and severe hardship to become a deacon responsible for the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way and then bishop of Rome around 217. Opponents criticized his willingness to reconcile repentant sinners after serious failures. Details of his death are uncertain, but the Church remembers his pastoral mercy and early leadership.
