St. Monica Novena

Tears That Sow Hope

Day 2 of 9 · 4 min

  1. 01

    Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

  2. 02

    Opening

Merciful Father, you sustained St. Monica through years of prayer for those she loved. Through her intercession, give me patience when change is slow, wisdom in my words, and hope when someone seems far from you. Receive every tear I cannot explain, and draw my family more deeply into the life of Christ. Amen.

  3. 03

    Your Intention

Let us pause in silence, and bring to mind the intention you are praying for.

In the app, your own saved intention rests here during the silence. The narration stays the same for everyone.

  4. 04

    Scripture

    Psalm 126:5-6

Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves.

  5. 05

    Reflection

Augustine remembered his mother's tears as the language of a love that refused to give up. Tears do not purchase an answer from God, but they can become prayer when words fail. What is sown in sorrow is held by the One who promises a harvest beyond what we can see. That harvest is God's gift, not a guarantee of the outcome we imagine.

  6. 06

    Prayer

Lord, receive the tears I have shed for this intention and the ones I have hidden from everyone else. Keep grief from hardening into bitterness. Through St. Monica's intercession, let my sorrow become a seed of compassion, trust, and patient hope. Amen.

  7. 07

    Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

  8. 08

    Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  9. 09

    Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

  10. 10

    Closing

St. Monica, faithful mother and patient intercessor, carry my intention before God. Pray for every family divided by unbelief, resentment, addiction, or distance. Teach me to love without controlling, to speak truth with gentleness, and to persevere without despair, trusting the mercy that led Augustine to baptism and sustained your family. Amen.

  11. 11

    Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
