¹You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,

²in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience.

³We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

⁴But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,

⁵even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

⁶and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

⁷that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;

⁸for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

⁹not of works, that no one would boast.

¹⁰For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

²Serve the LORD with gladness. Come before his presence with singing.

³Know that the LORD, he is God. It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

⁴Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

⁵For the LORD is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations.

¹³One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

¹⁴But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"

¹⁵He said to them, "Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses."

¹⁶He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly.

¹⁷He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?'

¹⁸He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

¹⁹I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry."'

²⁰"But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

²¹So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
