¹Elijah the Tishbite, who was one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word."

²Then the LORD's word came to him, saying,

³"Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁴You shall drink from the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."

⁵So he went and did according to the LORD's word, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.

⁶The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

¹I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?

²My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

³He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.

⁴Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

⁵The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand.

⁶The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

⁷The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul.

⁸The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

¹Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

²He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

³"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

⁴Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

⁵Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

⁶Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

⁷Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

⁸Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

⁹Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

¹⁰Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

¹¹"Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

¹²Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
