About Saint Virgil of Salzburg
Virgil was an eighth-century Irish monk and scholar who traveled to Bavaria and became abbot of Saint Peter’s and bishop of Salzburg. He supported missions among Slavic peoples, developed church life in Carinthia, and rebuilt Salzburg’s cathedral. A dispute over cosmology and baptismal practice shows him participating vigorously in the intellectual and pastoral questions of his age.
