About Saint Anthony of Padua
Anthony was born Fernando in Lisbon in 1195, studied with Augustinian canons, and joined the Franciscans after witnessing Moroccan martyrs. Illness redirected his missionary hopes toward Italy, where his biblical preaching, teaching, confessions, and advocacy for the poor flourished. The Portuguese friar died near Padua in 1231 and became a Doctor of the Church.
