About Pope Saint Gregory the Great
Gregory left public office and monastic peace to become pope in 590, when Rome faced plague, hunger, and political instability. He organized care for the poor, reformed Church administration, sent Augustine’s mission to England, and wrote the influential Pastoral Rule. He understood authority as humble service and called himself servant of the servants of God.
