The Freedom of a Cheerful Gift

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God of merciful love, you called St. Teresa of Calcutta to recognize and serve Christ in neighbors who were neglected and suffering. Through her intercession, give me a prayerful heart, attentive eyes, and willing hands, and receive the intention I carry. Let reverence guide both my compassion and my choices. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Christian generosity is neither performance nor compulsion. We discern what we can give: time, money, attention, skill, or prayer, and offer it freely. Healthy limits can protect long-term service, while gratitude keeps sacrifice from hardening into resentment. Teresa's endurance does not require every giver to ignore exhaustion or carry every burden alone.

St. Teresa, intercede for a generous and well-ordered heart within me. Help me give freely, receive help humbly, respect my responsibilities, and rejoice whenever another person is strengthened. Show me the difference between costly love, unhealthy compulsion, and duties that belong to others. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
